Which sectors require a VOG check?

There are many professions for which a Declaration on Behavior or Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) is mandatory. These are professions in which integrity and safety are of great importance. A number of examples of professions for which a VOG is mandatory:

  • Education: teachers, teaching assistants and other employees in primary, secondary and special education.
  • Childcare: employees in childcare and host parents.
  • Healthcare: employees in the healthcare sector, such as nurses, doctors, dentists, pharmacists and physiotherapists.
  • Justice: employees of the Public Prosecution Service, the judiciary and the legal profession.
  • Security: Security guards and guards in the private security industry.
  • Financial sector: employees in the financial sector, such as banks, insurers and lenders.
  • Voluntary work: volunteers who work with vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly or people with disabilities.
  • Driving instructors: to promote the quality of driving lessons, a VOG must be requested for the WRM pass.
  • Taxi drivers: a driver card or taxi pass can only be issued with a VOG.

This is just a selection of the professional groups for which a VOG Certificate of Good Conduct is mandatory. It may differ per profession and situation whether a VOG is mandatory. It is therefore always important to check whether a VOG is required for the specific function or activity for which it is required

How long is a VOG valid?

In principle, a Declaration on Behavior is valid for an indefinite period. This means that the VOG always remains valid, unless there are new criminal offenses that are relevant to the activities for which the VOG was issued. In that case, the validity of the VOG can be revoked.

There are situations in which the validity of the VOG is limited, for example for voluntary work or internships. In these cases, the period of validity of the VOG is usually limited to a maximum of two years. After that, the candidate or employee will have to be tested again for a Certificate of Good Conduct.
